Crackers for every Karnataka celebration
Deepavali is the biggest, but it is not the only day. Each guide tells you when the day falls, what families actually light, and which boxes to put in your order.
Festivals
The days the South buys crackers
Sealed Standard Fireworks boxes at the Sivakasi wholesale price, delivered for every one of them.
Deepavali
8 November 2026
In Karnataka Deepavali runs over three days. Naraka Chaturdashi opens with an oil bath before dawn, the Amavasya evening is for Lakshmi puja and rows of hanate on the doorstep, and Balipadyami, the day King Bali is welcomed home, closes it.
What to buyMysuru Dasara
September or October, over the ten days of Navaratri
Dasara is the Nada Habba, the state festival. For ten days the Mysuru palace is lit with thousands of bulbs, homes across Karnataka set out their gombe (the step display of dolls), Ayudha puja honours tools and vehicles, and on Vijayadashami the Jamboo Savari carries Goddess Chamundeshwari through Mysuru on an elephant.
What to buySankranti
Mid January
Sankranti is the harvest festival, Suggi in the villages. Families exchange ellu bella, the mix of sesame, jaggery, coconut and groundnut, with a piece of sugarcane, and in farming homes the cattle are washed, decorated and led over a small fire in the evening.
What to buyUgadi
March or April, on Chaitra Shuddha Padya
Ugadi opens the Kannada new year. Mango leaves go up over the door, everyone takes a bite of bevu bella, neem and jaggery for the bitter and sweet of the year ahead, there is holige for lunch, and in the evening the panchanga is read aloud.
What to buyChristmas and New Year
25 December and 31 December
Christmas fills the churches of Bengaluru and the coast for midnight mass, Mangaluru homes trade plates of kuswar sweets with the neighbours, and a week later families count the new year down from terraces and apartment lawns.
What to buyFamily occasions
The other days that need crackers
Weddings, temple festivals, housewarmings and birthdays, each with a very different list.
Weddings
Through the muhurtha season
A Kannada maduve has a few cracker moments: the groom's welcome at the hall the evening before, the muhurtha itself, often early in the morning, and the bride's send-off at the end of the day.
What to buyTemple festivals and jatres
All year, by temple and by village
Karnataka's calendar is full of jatres. Village fairs for the local goddess, rathotsavas where the temple car is pulled through the streets, and in Bengaluru the Karaga, the night procession that comes out of the Dharmaraya Swamy temple in Chaitra.
What to buyHousewarming
On your muhurtha day
A gruhapravesha follows the muhurtha, usually in the early hours. There is a homa, the family steps in together, and milk is boiled over on the new stove as the house's first celebration.
What to buyBirthdays
Any day of the year
A first birthday, a sixtieth or just a big family dinner often moves out to the courtyard or up to the terrace once the cake is cut.
